Granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) is a by-product of iron smelting in blast furnaces and serves as the core raw material for producing GGBFS slag powder.

Do you know how to store granulated blast furnace slag? As a granular intermediate product containing water, highly abrasive, and highly sensitive to activity, its storage is far more complex than imagined.

What is granulated blast furnace slag?

The molten slag (about 1400-1500°C) is discharged from the blast furnace and immediately subjected to high-pressure water jet impact, rapidly cooling at a rate of about 100°C/s. This process fractures the slag into sand-like particles ranging from 0-5mm and forms a vitreous structure exceeding 90%. This structure enables ground granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) to undergo hydration reactions under the influence of cement clinker, thereby generating strength.

5 core challenges of GBFS storage

Based on the characteristics of GBFS mentioned above, we have summarized five storage requirements for granulated slag.

AGICO GBFS storage system

Ordinary storage solutions are unsuitable for storing granulated blast furnace slag, as they would severely degrade its quality. Therefore, we developed a specialized steel silo storage system designed specifically for granulated blast furnace slag.

1. Remove residual moisture

The 8%–15% moisture content resulting from the water quenching process is the most distinctive feature of GBFS and also its greatest storage challenge. This content can be even higher during the rainy season.

Drainage channels must be designed to prevent the formation of mud zones at the bottom of the storage tank, avoid blockage at the discharge outlet, and prevent corrosion of the tank body

  2. Set up the stacking yard/feeding hopper drainage area (natural drying for 24-48 hours) before warehousing

2. Corrosion Protection for Steel Silos

The Mohs hardness of GBFS reaches 5-6, with distinct particle edges. Throughout the entire process of conveying, spreading, and discharging, it continuously wears down the metal surfaces it contacts, much like sandpaper.

3. Granulated blast furnace slag active protection

This is the “hidden loss” most easily overlooked in GBFS storage. Under conditions of high temperature, slow cooling, and humidity, the glassy body of granulated blast furnace slag may crystallize and lose its activity.

4. Prevent arching and blockage

GBFS is a wet granular material, and the fluidization device is ineffective for it, potentially exacerbating caking instead.

  2. Off-center or multiple discharge ports are designed to disrupt the symmetrical bridging conditions

  4. Flat bottom silo and side discharge solution—suitable for large-capacity scenarios, preventing wet material blockage in conical bins

5. Frost blockage in cold regions during winter

In regions where winter temperatures fall below -10°C, water-containing GBFS may freeze into lumps within the silo.

  1. Insulation Plan: Lay rock wool/polyurethane insulation layer (50-100mm thick) on the exterior walls of the warehouse
  2. Auxiliary heating solution: Electric tracing or steam coils are installed in the bottom unloading section of the silo
  3. Operation Strategy: Reduce inventory levels in warehouses during winter, accelerate turnover, and avoid prolonged static storage

GBFS vs GGBFS

Many customers confuse these two and think they are the same thing, but there are significant differences between GBFS and GGBFS, so the storage requirements are also different.

Granulated blast furnace slag is an intermediate product, it is not the final product. After being produced by steel mills, GBFS needs to be transported to a grinding station for drying and grinding before it can become GGBFS slag powder. The storage quality of this intermediate link directly determines the final activity level of ground granulated blast furnace slag.
