High-Efficiency Mineral Slag Storage Solutions
Turnkey Steel Silo Systems for Raw Steel Slag, Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS), and Fine GGBFS Powder.
AGICO Mineral Slag Storage
Do you know what mineral slag is? Mineral slag is a byproduct of the metal smelting process. During iron or steel making, impurities in the ore (like silica and alumina) react with flux to form molten material. After water quenching (fast cooling), it forms granular particles. This material is mineral slag.
Can mineral slag be stored in steel silos? Definitely yes. Steel silos are the best solution for storing slag (especially ground granulated blast furnace slag, GGBFS). AGICO provides automatic slag storage solutions. It uses high-strength spiral silos or bolted silos. With a patent fluidization discharge system, it aims to provide a closed, zero-pollution, and high-efficiency storage experience for cement plants, grinding plants, and slag processing plants.
- Service life can reach 30+ years
- Low cost, short construction period, and mobility
- Flat bottom or hopper bottom foundation design
- High automation, reduces manual work

Core Advantages Of AGICO Mineral Slag Silo
Due to the special physical properties of slag, the storage system must have specific technical configurations. AGICO developed steel silos specifically for storing mineral slag, tailored to the material’s properties. Below are the specific features of AGICO steel silos.

Spiral Folding Process
For the high density of slag, we use spiral folding (Lipp) or high-strength bolted technology. It strengthens the silo support and stiffener design to prevent wall deformation.
The silo body is made of 495mm wide steel strips by continuous interlocking. It forms a 30mm-40mm wide continuous spiral rib. The strength is several times higher than normal bolted silos.

Intelligent Discharge
To break the internal stress of materials and solve arching issues, AGICO developed fluidization technology. Since slag hardens easily, it must have a Fluidization or air box system. It uses compressed air to make the bottom material flow like liquid. AGICO’s discharge system can reach an efficiency of over 95%.

Anti-Corrosion And Anti-Moisture
Use double-sided hot-dip galvanized steel plates (275g/㎡-600g/㎡). For areas with large outdoor temperature differences, add rock wool insulation layers. This prevents internal condensation that causes slag to harden.

Wear Protection
In high-wear areas like the inlet and discharge cone, line with wear-resistant alloys or special materials. This extends the service life of the equipment.

Dust Control
The silo top has a pulse bag dust collector. It ensures dust emission meets international environmental standards (<20mg/m³) during feeding. There is also weight monitoring, real-time level meters, and pressure sensors. These are integrated into the central PLC control system for digital yard management.

Feeding System
Provide bucket elevators or pneumatic conveying systems. It offers efficient and convenient transport for your project.

Monitoring System
Besides level meters, there are Temperature Monitoring devices. Since slag grinding has residual heat, monitoring temperature is important for safety.

Safety Features
Also, we have Pressure relief valves. This prevents excessive pressure inside the silo during air discharge.

Mineral Slag Silo Solution
Slag has different physical properties at different stages. Each material stage needs a different storage method. Our solution provides different customized strategies:
| Material Type | Core Storage Challenges | AGICO Solution Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Raw Steel Slag /Granulated blast furnace slag / granulated slag | High hardness, strong abrasiveness, high density. | High-strength stiffener design; Wear-resistant alloy liner for the inlet; Steep-cone bottom design for gravity discharge. |
| GGBFS Powder (Ground granulated blast furnace slag) | Very easy to absorb moisture, easy to arch/harden, poor flow. | Multi-point and multi-zone fluidization discharge system; Rock wool insulation system (anti-condensation); High-efficiency dust collector on top. |
Why Choose Steel Silos Instead Of Concrete Silos?

Cost-Effective
Compared to concrete silos, steel silos save 30%-50% of investment costs.

Short Construction Period
Spiral folding technology is very fast for on-site construction. A 1,000-ton silo only takes 5-7 days.

Space Saving
Steel silos have a small footprint. They are suitable for grinding plants with tight space.
Why Choose Us

- Custom Design
Accurately calculate the wall thickness and cone angle based on the angle of repose, moisture content, and density of slag.

- Turnkey EPC
Full process delivery from geological survey, foundation design, and silo construction to electrical commissioning.

- Corrosion Resistance
Use 275g/㎡ or higher standard galvanized plates. Provide extra coating protection for corrosive industrial mining areas.
Global Success Stories
10,000 Ton GGBFS Storage Project In Indonesia

- Location: Jakarta, Indonesia
- Material: GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag)
- Silo Type: 2 sets of Lipp Steel Silos (5,000 tons each)
- Solution Highlight: For the hot and humid rainforest climate in Indonesia, we used a Rock Wool Insulation system. This effectively prevented internal condensation that causes slag powder to harden. With the multi-zone fluidization discharge system, it reached a discharge rate of over 98%. It solved the customer's pain point of frequent blocking in their previous concrete silos.
Multi-Silo Slag Grinding Plant In South Africa

- Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
- Material: Raw Slag & Finished GGBFS Powder
- Silo Type: 4 sets of Bolted Steel Silos (2,000 tons each)
- Solution Highlight: This is a typical turnkey EPC project. We provided not only storage silos but also integrated bucket elevators and silo top pulse dust collectors. The silo body uses reinforced hot-dip galvanized steel plates to handle the corrosion risk in local high-dust environments.
Port Slag Transfer Terminal In Vietnam

- Location: Haiphong Port, Vietnam
- Material: Mineral Slag Aggregates (GBFS)
- Silo Type: 1 large-scale hopper Bottom Silo (3,000 tons)
- Solution Highlight: Since port transfer needs high loading and unloading speed, we designed a 60° Steep Cone bottom. This ensures granular slag can quickly pass through conveyors to ships without mechanical aid. It significantly reduces the customer's transfer costs and time.
