Lime includes quicklime and hydrated lime. It is a hard building material. The main part of lime is calcium oxide (CaO). Lime is made by heating stones with high calcium carbonate, like limestone, dolomite, chalk, or shells, at 900–1100°C. What should be noted when using lime silos?
- Fire prevention and explosion control: When lime comes into contact with water, it will undergo a strong exothermic reaction, generating a large amount of heat, which is highly likely to cause fire or explosion. Therefore, during the storage and transportation of lime, it must be strictly kept dry, and moisture must be avoided from coming into contact with it.
- Storage isolation requirements: Limestone should not be mixed with flammable, explosive substances or liquid chemicals. An independent storage area should be set up to prevent fires or explosions.
- Chemical compatibility note: Limestone should be stored and used away from all acidic substances to prevent neutralization reactions. All operations involving limestone should be completed as quickly as possible to minimize risk exposure.
- Worker protection: When handling lime, personal protection measures should be taken. It is recommended to wear respiratory protection equipment, sealed dust-proof goggles, wear protective clothing made of dust-resistant fibers, and protective gloves, and apply grease-containing protective ointment on exposed skin to prevent lime dust from entering the respiratory tract or coming into contact with the skin.
